More info
Lead-free onglaze colours can be used to paint objects for food use (with the exception of colours containing cadmium, namely numbers 2059, 2082, 2083 and 2086). It is a mixture of flux and lead-free oxides, perfect for the decoration of any faience or porcelaine support. They are a perfect substitute for lead colours if you do not want to use lead products. The extremely fine grain eases the preparation of your paste. Use your mediums and oils the same way as for the preparation of lead colours.
Please be careful when choosing the colours, do not rely on the colour of the powdered pigments in the pot as it does not match the baked colour.
Take the time to do your preparation accurately. Use the Schjerning mediums. For a good application, the preparation should not be too oily or too dry. Excessively greasy preparation may spread, even bubble or peel during baking. However, if the mixture is too dry, the paint will look dull and may even disappear.
For your mixes, equip yourself with a Schjerning faience palette with 12 or 24 wells or with an American metal pallet with a plexiglass plate. Place the pigment that you wish to dilute with a palette knife. Drop by drop, add the mixing mediums with pipettes . Be careful, make sure that your mix will be adapted to the technique you want to achieve.
All colours are miscible with two exceptions:
The reds and yellows are not mixable because they would "eat" each other during baking
The colours with cadmium are very intense and are only mixable to each other! These are numbers 2059, 2082, 2083, 2086. They should not be overlaid on other colours without cadmium. If this were the case, the colours could turn gray. On the other hand, you can create an orange with red and yellow cadmium.
It is best to test your mixture on a sample surface and bake it before starting on your larger pieces.
The flux (2040), once added to your mix, give a greater brilliance to the final result!
To make mat pigments, add mattifying agent 180 to your preparation. Your mat pigments must not be cooked above 800° C otherwise they would start to shine.
A colour to create embossed effects: the 2141 Brilliant Relief that is smooth after burning
Clean your surface with alcohol or acetone before starting to paint. This will allow a good grip of the paint on your support. Apply your mixture "pigment + medium" with a brush. For a series of pieces of the same style, you can use stencils and then stamp with a sponge inside the pattern.
The material used for cadmium colours should not be used for normal colours and vice versa. Separate your material in two because a residue of colour with cadmium could turn all your preparation without cadmium gray!
Apply thin layers of paint.
Once your work is finished, bake the realization so that the colours are definitively resistant. Be careful to respect the temperatures and order of the colours!
The general rule: the colours develop on average between 750° C and 820° C with exceptions. For example, reds that are baked at too high temperatures would turn brown: it is best to bake them between 780° C and 800° C. On the other hand, blues like high temperatures: they must be baked between 850 and 880° C.
The average baking time should be 800° C for 30 minutes. On faience, always reduce the temperature: an average of 730° C is better.
To bake the colours with cadmium, we will opt for a temperature of 740° C, which can go up to 780° C maximum! If you are burning both cadmium and cadmium-free colours, start with cadmium-free colours, apply cadmium and anneal. If you prefer to bake everything together, it is advisable to apply a thicker layer of cadmium colour (or even several layers allowing it to dry between two applications).
If you have colours on the same realization that must bake at different temperatures, it is necessary to start by painting and fix the colours at highest temperatures and decrease further. Do not do the opposite! Some shades may deteriorate or change colour!
You can stick to a simple application. Multiple layers can enhance the colour if it's the result you want. Then bake a second time.
Once the colours are out of the oven, they are permanently fixed and you will not be able to remove them!
On a palette, you can expect to keep your colours for 2 to 3 days. If you keep the colours in a hermetically sealed pill box, you can keep them for up to 2 months.
